A federal judge awarded awarded a $2.15 million settlement to a group of people who were strip-searched in the Will County jail in 2003. Last December, the judge ruled that the jail had violated the rights of minor offenders by forcing them to drop their skivvies. Such poking and prodding is only allowed when officers have reasonable suspicion that an offender is carrying contraband like drugs or weapons.
That's a nice settlement for the searchees, but how about the searchers? Chicagoist thinks they deserve some compensation too, they were just following orders. Strip-searching the type of people who end up in the Will County jail can't be pleasant. We all know where they hide the contraband after all.
