Now That's What We're Talking About!

Wow. That's all Chicagoist can say about yesterday's indictment of Tony Rezko. We're glad to see that Fitzgerald finally grew some fucking balls and indicted someone that's actually up to no good. When the news hit, we were busy at our day jobs (Chicagoist has to eat too, ya know), but when we got home, let us tell you, we were all over it.

Blagojevich (wisely) took some quick action to try to get in front of this with an early evening press conference. (The best part is the man that interrupts towards the end to ask for a state contract!) While claiming that he didn't know about the shakedowns, the governor basically acknowledged that Rezko had made recommendations and given "political" advice to him, but contended the whole time that it was "on the political side" not on the government side

While Blagojevich was working the press and moving his message, the opposition was ... issuing press releases!?! Judy Baar Topinka's running mate Joe Birkett issued a statement that didn't say anything of substance, while Green Party candidate Rich Whitney offered up at least some alternatives. Neither one held a press conference, giving the advantage to Blagojevich, at least in terms of talking to the voters.

Chicagoist stands behind our previous assesment of this campaign: Judy Baar Topinka has squandered whatever opportunity she had to portray herself as a smart, reasonable alternative to Blagojevich, and even with these indictments swirling around the Governor's office, we doubt that she'll be able to rise to the occasion as G-Rod sinks into this growing shit-storm. The neat thing about federal indictments is that they don't go away after Election Day. Thank God Pat Quinn is a true progressive....
