La Rocca Ticket Giveaway

By Scott Smith in Arts & Entertainment on Oct 24, 2006 3:30PM

Another day, another contest giveaway: Chicagoist is hooking you up with a pair of tickets to this week’s Birdmonster/La Rocca show at Schuba’s.

We’re usually hesitant to recommend a band whose songs have shown up on “One Tree Hill” - lest we seem like a 13-year old girl - but La Rocca's full-length album The Truth grabbed us on our first listen. The group's sound 2006_10_larocca.jpg reflects the rag-tag bag of influences of an Irish band with an English singer that moves to L.A. to make its name. “Goodnight” is a dead ringer for some unreleased Coldplay track, and that’s fine if you’re into that sort of thing. But we much prefer the hooky choruses that brim with optimism on songs like “Sketches (20 Something Life)” or the Jameson-soaked vocals and Faces-style piano of “The Truth.” They get Dylan-esque on "Some You Give Away" and ape the sunnier side of the Children of Nuggets sound on "Eyes While Open."

Sometimes we go to the bar to sort out the world with wisdom from a seen-it-all bartender. But sometimes we just want to talk to someone with a pretty face who entertains us with a few charming stories. La Rocca is the kind of charmer that we hope to run into again soon.

La Rocca joins Birdmonster this Thursday at Schuba’s for an 18 and over show starting at 9:00 p.m. To win a pair of tickets for you and a friend, fill out the form after the jump. Contest ends tonight and winners will be notified via e-mail tomorrow morning. Losers will have to make do with one of the other 173 shows going on that night.
