Natarus Takes on The Donald

By Rachelle Bowden in News on Oct 30, 2006 6:12PM

2006_10_natarus.jpgWondering what's gotten under Uncle Burt's sickly green skin this week? It's The Donald. More specifically, it's a 10-foot-tall kiosk on Michigan Avenue in front of the Wrigley Building that markets the new Trump tower. It's got photos and prices and sales information. And Natarus doesn't like it, even though in 2003 he backed legislation allowing such ads.

Natarus and a Trump rep have been going back and forth. Natarus wants the sign removed, Trump has agreed only to take prices and sales info off of it. So ... there will just be photos now?

This, of course, brings up a larger issue. Outdoor advertising, as a whole, has been under attack lately. How much is too much, how much public space are we willing to devote to it? Is it OK on bus shelters and street benches, but not on freestanding signs put up for the sole purpose of advertising? What do you think? How much is too much? Should Trump be able to put his kiosk up in the middle of the busiest sidewalk in the city?
