Dude, Cancer Sucks

Cancer isn't pretty, no matter how you slice it. And when a young woman is struck with a genetic form of cancer, it's hard to find any silver lining to that cloud.
But when your friends and family band together to form an ongoing fundraiser on your behalf, that little cancer cloud hanging over your head may seem a bit smaller.
Rebecca Babcock was diagnosed with a genetic form of colorectal cancer called FAP, which most often strikes people under the age of 40. She completed radiation therapy in July and came out of surgery about a month ago. Her friends say she is doing just fine, but modern medicine ain't cheap. This girl has bills to pay.
To help Becca with her high medical expenses, her friends and family formed the Web site Cancer Sucks, where people can provide donations. Additionally, Cancer Sucks has begun organizing events on her behalf. The first event took place in July at the Old Town School of Folk Music and brought in $20,000--all of which went to Becca's medical fund. This is a hefty chunk of change, but Becca's bills currently exceed $60,000.
On Nov. 11, Cancer Sucks will host "Skate for Becca" at Orbit Skate Center in Palatine. Those who come out will be able to couples skate, backwards skate, shoot the duck and roller limbo for a $10 entry fee. There will also be a raffle with a chance to win prizes from local businesses. The event is sponsored by Formula Werks, which will provide merchandise for purchase. Chicagoist also hears there will be baked goods for sale. Nothing gets us hotter than brownies and roller skates. Nothing.
Formula Werks is also putting together a fundraiser that will involve custom painted skates by artists around the world. The event is still in its beginning stages, but it is tenatively scheduled for early 2007. Details will be posted to the Web site as they become available.
