Painter and Social Commentator has Died at 75

06_11_12_benny.jpgArtist Benny Andrews died of cancer on Friday in his New York home. Andrews, who served in the air force, used his G.I. bill to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has permanent collections in the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Hirshbom Museum in Washington, D.C.

Andrews art focused on his childhood in the segregated south, he went on to paint many emotionally charged paintings, focusing on the holocaust and the civil rights movement. Most recently he was in New Orleans working on an art project with children affected by Hurricane Katrina. You can view some of Benny Andrew's work here.
