TV Spots

Oprah urges each and every one of her viewers to “live your best life.” And whether she’s making like an angel or giving out free cars, she often helps to facilitate that in any way she can. But we’re pretty sure she’s not happy about people using her Oprahness to scam people out of money via e-mail phishing schemes. Illinois’ own angel Attorney General Lisa Madigan says not to fall for it.

In other less felonious Chicago television news, the 48th annual Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards were announced yesterday and again today. Among others, the Chicago/Midwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences bestowed acclaim on Walter Jacobson, who won for commentary pieces given on the station that later fired him; ABC-7’s coverage of the plane skidding off the runway at Midway last winter; Check Please!, and indie stalwart JBTV for a “commercial announcement.” Antonio Mora and Larry Potash tied for best anchor while Steve Baskerville earned the right to say “Suck it, Skilling!” for the next year. Acceptance speeches will be streaming online here later today.

2006_11_myboys.jpgFinally, next Tuesday at 9 p.m. on TBS is the premiere of “My Boys,” a show about a woman who’s a sportswriter for the Chicago Sun-Times, who has lots of dudes as friends. It stars Jordana Spiro - who looks like a dopplegänger for Amanda Bynes in all the ads - and also features Jim Gaffigan who, if ours was a fair and just world, would be King. We’ll probably tune in to see if they refer to the “L” as “the subway” even though reviews have been lukewarm, at best. Still, it can’t be any worse than “Freddie" or “Happy Hour.”
