White (and Silver) Christmas

By Hanna Aronovich in Miscellaneous on Dec 12, 2006 1:45PM

Not to damper the holiday spirit, but sometimes we get sick of Christmas. Red and green are really a horrid color combination. I mean, you’d never wear an outfit in that color scheme, so why is it OK to decorate in such an offensive pairing? At least the holiday buses are cheerful and multicolored. And, don’t get us started on the tacky factor. ornament2.JPG

In truth, Chicagoist comes from a mixed-faith family, so our holiday efforts are half-hearted at best. But, we do love pretty lights and shiny objects which is why we were thrilled to bits when the Tribune reported retailers are favoring white Christmas decorations this year.

The newspaper said the presence of white on the runway and in home accessories influenced the decision. “There is so much white around," color psychologist Leatrice Eiseman told the Tribune. “From a psychological standpoint, it's a great purifier. White is a cleansing color. When you use white, you're wiping the slate clean."

White truly is the all-purpose color, appealing to a range of religions and faiths, as well as being eye-catching, especially when accented with silver. The Tribune points to Target, Old Navy, Ann Taylor, Pottery Barn and Saks Fifth Avenue as retailers promoting white in their holiday products, advertisements and displays.

We’re in full support of the winter white movement – just so long as we don’t get snowed in.
