Badder Than Santa

By Tankboy in Arts & Entertainment on Dec 21, 2006 9:08PM

While we thoroughly enjoyed Billy Bob Thornton’s performance in Bad Santa a few years ago, we couldn’t help feeling a sense of déjà vu. You see, we suspect Thornton may have used a local little gem as his inspiration. The drunken stumbling. The brawling sexiness. The propensity for slurred cursing. We had seen it all before.

Elfvis emerges every December from whatever sty he hides in for 364 days a year. On that magical evening he takes over the Double Door and spreads good tidings of cheap beer and sloppy seconds. If he wasn’t so much fun, he would be vile, disgusting, and scary.

Oh wait, those are all fun, aren’t they?

Elfvis performs his own versions of holiday carols to the grinding backing of his metal-based band of merry pranksters. Every year we go, and every year we are treated to a holiday spectacular for folks from every faith and any background. We guarantee someone's sensibilities will get tweaked, but the sacrilege is never mean-spirited, and that’s what helps set Elfvis apart from the other pagans.

Actually, at its core, an Elfvis show is all about community and celebrating a sense of family with friends both close and tangential. So yeah, on one hand there’s a whole bunch of dirty fun going on, but underneath that slithering beast pumps a heart that easily grows more than three sizes in one day.

Plus, as you can see below, the evening is truly infused with the spirit of giving.
