Taxi Driver Wanted in Hit and Run

By Timmy Watson in News on Jan 14, 2007 3:55PM

Early Saturday morning a woman was crossing the street at 1227 N. Ashland and was hit by a cab. Chicago police are searching for the taxi driver, who witnesses say was speeding through a red light when the woman was hit and critically injured. The 26-year old is currently at the Stroger Hospital of Cook County.

Police are still looking for any information regarding the cab driver, who was last seen speeding North on Ashland. They are looking for a yellow cab with damage to the front of the vehicle and damage to the windshield. Perhaps one of readers spotted the cab? The area on Ashland is at the intersection of Milwaukee/Ashland near the Division blue line stop.

Statistics surrounding hit and runs are pretty astounding, a recent USA Today article indicated hit and run deaths have increased 20% since 2000. Peter Kissinger, the CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says there isn't a specific reason for the increase, but most likely it is due higher pedestrian traffic and the fact that drivers are becoming more and more distracted and aggressive.
