Energy! Lots of people! These groups aren’t bands, they’re “collectives” – a moniker that let’s us accept that not every member will be on every album or even at every show. Not knowing who may show up adds to the anticipation.
Animal Collective is known for creating layered, multi-faceted songs that carry the listener on a trip. Is it a drug trip? Chaotic? Or just a dreamscape of interconnectedness? Or the ability to stay connected to their inner child?
Metro, May 17, all ages, $21, on sale noon Saturday.
“Stephen Stephen” is up on the Apples in Stereo Myspace page reminding us of the rock and awe with which Mr. Colbert totally annihilated The Decemberists not so long ago. Power-pop with an ironic twist, plus songs from New Magnetic Wonder (slated for official release on February 6th) are sure to keep us smiling on this Friday night at the Subterranean.
Subterranean Feb. 23, 18+, $12-14, on sale noon Friday.
And last, but certainly not least – Mucca Pazza. If this crazy marching band has not been on the calendar before, NOW is the time. Their energy combined with the controlled chaos of a group this size makes having a bad time impossible. Mucca Pazza makes us reminisce about our years in the marching band, but with their help we can retroactively believe it was cool to be in the band.
Double Door, Feb. 23, $10, 21+, on sale noon Saturday.
That’s it for this installment of Empty Out Your Wallet. We may just be on our way out of the doldrums of winter as many, many great shows are going on sale this weekend.
