Robber Kills Man at Front Door

A weird, gruesome murder stemming from a potential robbery occurred yesterday in the suburb of Schaumburg. 40-year-old Keith Daugherty was killed when he opened his door to someone wielding a knife who stabbed him to death.
Police do not believe this was a random act, and hope that someone in the neighborhood might have seen something that will lead to the arrest of the suspect. However, the story we read contained the following sentence, which leaves us entirely confused: "Neighbors reported that when Daugherty answered the door his killer demanded money, then fatally stabbed him."
If the neighbors were able to ascertain that the guy demanded money, how come they couldn't better describe the man or the vehicle (Caucasian male, 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet tall, weighing 180 pounds and driving a tan SUV)?? How close to a house do you have to be to hear someone ask for money? Did the guy scream it?
Of course the article contains the requisite neighbor cliches: “Seemed like a nice guy, seen him out in his front yard, the typical neighbor wave." Wouldn't it be stunning if someone ever said about someone, "You know, this guy was a real dick?" The fact of the matter is, people who are close to the victim know how much they are missed -- do they really need some sound blurb from someone on the news to validate them? What if they weren't even friends with that neighbor? It would be a shock if they had someone on the news that had not-so-joyful feelings for someone. We just think about these things.
If you have any information about this case, the Schaumburg Police Department's non-emergency phone number is 847.882.3586.
