The Chicago Shamrox indoor lacrosse team will be hosting the New York Titans this Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Sears Centre. Prior to the game, the New York Police Department (NYPD) will take on the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) in a game of indoor lacrosse. The doors open at 11:30 a.m. with the benefit match taking place at noon followed by the Shamrox game at 3 p.m.
There is a strong tradition of lacrosse within the two services. The NYPD lacrosse team was started by Ronny Kloepfer in 1993. One of his goals for the lacrosse team had been to play the Fire Department in a professional arena before a professional game. Unfortunately, Kloepfer was one of the New York finest who lost his life on September 11. The two teams will play out Kloepfer's dream game on Sunday. The FDNY Lacrosse team, which was organized ten years ago, has over 40 members of which more than 20 will be traveling to Chicago for the game.
The game will benefit the New York Police & Fire Widows' & Children's Fund. Any fans that mention the "Battle of the Badges" promotion when ordering their tickets will have $5 of their ticket go directly to the cause. Additionally, the teams will be raising funds by selling T-shirts and running a silent auction.
The 3-7 Shamrox have suffered through a six-game losing streak and will play a road game against the Philadelphia Wings on Saturday night before coming home to host the Titans. The Titans are one of the three teams the Shamrox have earned a victory against this season.
