One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

We were so sure it would lead to something, anything, but such is not the case. Once again we return to the case of Dr. David Cornbleet, the dermatologist heinously murdered in his office in October 2006. Last month we told you about the efforts of Dr. Cornbleet's son, Jon, to enhance surveillance footage taken of a "person of interest" in the case. Tapes from the downtown office building and a Lincoln Park Home Depot were shined up and distributed to the media, as well as posted on Jon's MySpace account. Things looked promising.
That is, until the Home Depot recordee recognized himself on the tape. The whole deal with Home Depot was, an unidentified object left at the crime scene was found to only be sold at that particular home improvement chain. Cameras caught the man buying the same object about a month before the murder took place. However, upon seeing the enhanced video splashed all over newspapers, websites and TV, the man in question contacted the authorities. After an interrogation, police determined that he is not a suspect.
Jon Cornbleet, in the face of sickening blows, still maintains hope: "It's enormously frustrating but you can’t get frustrated," he told CBS. We'd forgive him if, in private, he had the urge to punch a wall or two on hearing the news. There are still leads to be had, however. Apparently the Home Depot guy wasn't the same as the one taped coming out of Cornbleet's office, so there's that. They looked an awful lot alike to us, but they're now being treated as separate people. Plans are also in the works for "America's Most Wanted" to air the case later this month. With such damning evidence, we hope something tangible will come out of the added exposure, if only for the sake of the tireless son.
