All hail the start of Green Market season! Chicagoist loves the green markets, cooks love the markets, and even professional chefs are getting into them. A quick perusal of the official Green Market guide reveals that most are starting up between the middle of May and the middle of June, and most are running through October.

Since it seems like this year local is the new organic (see: The Omnivore's Dilemma), Chicago Localvores, a new blog, is a great resource for those trying to buy apples from Illinois, not somewhere in South America. The site aims to be a resource for people who want to "eat healthy, delicious food grown and farmed near where they live; establish relationships with like-minded food producers and consumers; ensure that farm animals are treated well while alive and humanely when processed for food and reduce their impact on the environment." For an alternative take on the environmental benefits of eating locally, see this Economist article (subscription/log-in required).

Chicagoist is excited about the summer bounty that is coming our way in a few short weeks. We love candy-sweet cherry tomatoes. And also strawberries, stone fruits and gorgeous, fragrant bunches of basil. Basically, we want it all. What summer fruits and vegetables are you excited about?
