Baby-on-Board Review: Muskie's

It’s fast approaching Memorial Day weekend, the official start of grilling season. But if late nights up rocking (and rocking and rocking) your little one have made you too exhausted to head to Paulina and man the grill yourself, pack up the baby and head to Muskie’s instead.
This particular Lincoln Avenue burger joint scores big points with parents. You won’t find bathrooms, changing tables or high chairs, but with its tasty food, warm-hearted staff, outdoor seating and proximity to a park, this place is packed with happy families. Its doors are easy to navigate with a stroller, and patrons are usually kind enough to help with the maneuver. It also draws its fair share of rockers from the Elbo Room as well as uniformed police officers; interacting with the eclectic and usually friendly clientele thrills our kid to no end. Another favorite “regular” is the actual Muskie, grinning toothily from its mount above the door.
We’ve tried almost everything on the menu in all its artery-clogging glory, and you simply can’t go wrong from grilled chicken rooster to a bacon double char burger. Their onion rings are addictive, and their gyros are packed generously with tasty seasoned meat. Muskie’s doesn’t overwhelm you with a multitude of choices or fancy flavor combinations; their food is simple and plainly delicious. The prices are reasonable, too, and you can grab an (albeit small) hot dog for less than $2. Wash it down with a chocolate malt, and you’ve got yourself a perfect early summer meal.
Due to all these factors, Muskie’s does get busy during warm afternoons. If all seats are taken try South Lakeview playground, right around the corner, with its shaded benches and a handful of tables. It’s a toddler favorite with its soft, textured floor and towering plastic playground equipment.
Everyone in Chicago has their favorite place to grab some greasy grub. We’re heading out to join the other families at Muskie’s.
Muskie’s at 2878 North Lincoln is open from 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., give or take, every day except Sunday. It’s also closed Memorial Day, so get your burgers early this weekend.
