Chicagoist didn't want to keep all the techie fun to ourselves so we thought we would share with you that we are heading to Web Ascent tomorrow night at Union Park. Web Ascent is an event that recognizes technology communities and is a perfect place for entrepreneurs, developers, designers, undergraduate and graduate students interested in the Web 2.0 space to mingle.
The event is sponsored by one of our favorite blogs, Mashable the world's largest blog focused exclusively on social networks. The event features a keynote address by Joyce Park, CTO and co-founder of Renkoo.com a social network that helps existing friends arrange when and where to meet using technology that's worlds beyond Evite. In addition to the keynote speaker, there is an interesting line-up of presenters including speakers from ChaCha, ImThere, Media River and several other companies. Check out the growing list at WebAscentEvents.com.
Kristen Nicole, lead writer for Mashable and the event organizer, told Chicagoist "The ease with which web 2.0 businesses can be created is very much due to the collaborative nature of the networking tools, such as wikis and remote access, that the Internet has afforded us. This has had a huge impact on the types of companies that can be developed, the business acumen required to begin a start-up, and the decrease in capital necessary to take on the endeavor of creating a new company. We are seeing a rise in the web 2.0 businesses all over the world as a result, but what is unique about Chicago is the strong IT community that serves as a great backbone to any web 2.0 development that has recently occurred, and being somewhat insulated from the east and west coasts has left us with a great deal of hard-working entreprenuers who have gone above and beyond to build quality products." This event is meant to celebrate that growth here in Chicago and to help bridge the gap between Chicago and Silicon Valley.
The event is at Union Park and begins at 7pm on Wednesday. Make sure to get there on time as there are free cocktails and beer from 7pm - 8pm followed by 1/2 price appetizers all night long. There are still some tickets available for purchase at the Web Ascent website for $25.
