CTRL-Z

2007_08_sports_zambrano_ctr.jpgAthletes these days just don't have nicknames like they used to — isn't that right, Fred?

One of the lame monikers you picked on specifically was Carlos Zambrano's "Big Z." Well, we just happen to have a better one for him. How about we dub him CTRL-Z instead?

As any of us who spend time on a computer know, CTRL-Z is the "undo" command. Given Zambrano's propensity to do things for which he must apologize afterward, it seems like the perfect name for him. And then there's the irony factor because so many of his apologies result from his inability to control himself. So it works on two levels!

Speaking of apologies from Carlos Zambrano, the Cubs ace held a press conference before Tuesday evening's game in order to atone for his comments the day before:

The first thing I want to do is apologize to the Cubs fans. There were some moments [Monday] when I was angry. When human beings are angry, they say a lot of things they shouldn't say, and I am human. I made a mistake, and the thing about me is that when I make a mistake, I know I have to apologize and do the correct thing.

To prove he knew what he did was wrong, he pointed to his head and heart when explaining where his apology was coming from. So Zambrano's really making progress on his anatomy — the day before, he could only point to his head! Of course we would have expected him to point to Lou Piniella and Jim Hendry if he were truly identifying the place from where the decision to atone came....
