3 Is the Magic Number

The Cubs couldn't help themselves Wednesday night, as they dropped their second straight game to the lowly Florida Marlins, losing 7-4 in Miami.
However, that weird sensation for Cubs fans of actually cheering for the Cardinals worked, because St. Louis did help the Cubs by knocking off the Brewers 7-3.
The losses by both the Cubs and Brewers mean that the Cubs magic number is now three.
The Cubs have one more chance to reel in the Marlins this afternoon before they turn their attention to this evening's Brewers-Padres game. Can San Diego help the Cubs out? They themselves are playing for their playoff lives as they cling to a narrow one-game lead over both the Colorado Rockies and Philadelphia Phillies for the wild card.
As we head into the season's final weekend, the Cubs can relax a little with a two game lead—but anything's possible. They just need to keep chipping away at that magic number. The Cubs certainly have the easier draw for a final series as they wrap things up with three games in Cincinnati.
