The Single Sailor Goes Stag

By Chuck Sudo in Miscellaneous on Oct 10, 2007 11:15PM

2007_10_salute.jpgDuring our six years in the Navy we can remember being away from home during the holidays but not unwanted, thanks to the volunteer families of Adopt-a-Sailor programs in the towns and countries where we found ourselves on duty. Sailors at Great Lakes Naval Station ("Naval Station Great Lakes" in military/Yoda-speak) won't have that opportunity this Thanksgiving. Recent changes in program guidelines by NSGL brass effectively shut out individual families from the Adopt-A-Sailor program. Instead, sailors and recruits will be able to spend their Thanksgiving at churches and VFW halls throughout the area.

God, turkey, football, old war stories, and (maybe) Fox News: sounds like a B-grade John Wayne movie come to life. Here's hoping that the chain of command at NSGL changes their mind and extends the invitation to those families again.
