Desperately Seeking, Chicago

Unless you’ve been dating one person your entire postpubescent life (don’t laugh, we know people like that … suckers), you know what being single is all about. We’ve been there. Whether it’s Match.com or the darker side of craigslist, most of us are just trying to find that special someone. Or his brother, if he’s younger and wears glasses. Rawr. Er, we digress.
Such situations make ripe environments in which dating education courses flourish like so much bacteria. But two courses in Palatine go so far as to suggest by signing up, you just might meet your soul mate. It says so right in the title: “How to Meet Your Soul Mate or Merely Your Next Date.” Okay, so it’s also for normal folks who just want to relax and not let every little neurosis show when trying to chat someone up. But teachers Michele Solomon and Bill Jedlicka stress sticking to what you really want from a partner, or else suffer the consequences of disappointment. They also teach ice-breaking moves, invite role-playing, and even assign tasks like striking up a minute-long convo with a stranger. Guess we’ll have to ditch that heart-stopping glance-across-the-crowded-room plan for our blissful future.
Bill Jedlicka’s course is $79 and runs Wednesday nights at Harper College from Nov. 21 through Dec. 12. Michele Solomon’s course is $39 and is one night only, Nov. 10 at Fremd High School, Chicagoist's alma mater. (And we thought visiting for our reunion took a lot of guts.)
