Benson's Season Over
By Benjy Lipsman in News on Nov 27, 2007 3:09PM
The Bears announced what Chicagoist suspected when we saw Cedric Benson remain on the ground following a 21 -ard run in the second quarter of Sunday's game: the injury will cut his season short. Benson will undergo surgery on his ankle that will shelve the Bears running back until next year.
The Bears running game was a major area of concern even before the injury. The Bears are averaging only 85.3 yards/game -- third worst in the NFL -- and their 3.3 yards/carry is dead last in the league. Benson, who received the lion's share of those carries, averaged only 3.4 yards/carry... not exactly the kind of production a team built around its running game expects.
With Benson done for the year, the running game now falls on Adrian Peterson and Garrett Wolfe. Yikes!
Let's hope that Bears GM Jerry Angelo is working the phones and trying to sign a running back, but who's on the market at this late date? We hear that Samkon Gado is available...
Maybe now people will stop talking about playoffs.
