Two Children Killed in SW Side Fire
By Margaret Lyons in News on Dec 3, 2007 2:27PM
Two little boys, ages 2 and 3, died in a Southwest Side fire this morning, where two adults were also seriously injured. The cause of the fire is still unknown. At least 10 people were living in the 1 1/2-story single-family house on 66th Place and Kedzie, and so far the fire department can't tell if the smoke alarms in the house were operational or not. Remember: Get smoke alarms!
According to the Illinois State Fire Marshall, you should have a smoke alarm on every lived-in floor in your house plus the basement, and they should be installed within 15 feet of where people sleep. Your landlord is legally required to supply and install smoke alarms in your apartment, and those smoke alarms are legally required to go absolutely apeshit when you burn one stupid piece of toast.
