See? He Told You So

2007_12_16.tunney.jpgWow, Alderman Tom Tunney has been having an interesting couple of months. First he gets a ticket for talking on his cell phone while driving and may have received special favors from the police department, then he makes a sweet deal and moves his flagship Ann Sather's, and now it's being reported that Tunney was the victim of an attempted holdup yesterday afternoon just a block from his 44th ward office.

Five teenagers, who apparently were part of an earlier robbery as well, went up to Tunney along the 3300 block of North Seminary, displayed something that looked like a gun and demanded his wallet. Tunney complied, but when the teens discovered there was no cash in it (can someone loan the Alderman a twenty?) they gave it back and ran off. They were later apprehended by police and Tunney was able to identify two of them. As of last night, no charges had been filed.

Tunney has been quoted in both his traffic ticket incident and in response to the crackdown on gay cruising in forest preserves questioning the police department's priorities "when we've got violent crime on the street." So now he's got a nice example to accentuate his point in the future. Of course, so does anyone running against him making the case that Tunney does not do enough to help reduce crime in his ward... double-edged sword, there, Tom. --Prescott Carlson
