One Great Sandwich: Frances' Fountain Blue

salad%20052.jpgWhen it comes to sandwiches, we rely on a Miesian philosophy. “Less is more” is our sandwich motto (it used to be “MORE SPAM”, but we changed it). The Fountain Blue at Frances’ is the simplest, most delicious sandwich ever.

The Fountain Blue is the quintessential chicken salad sandwich. Stacked high on whatever bread you choose – we choose Challah, holla – the chicken salad is all white meat, mayo, salt, pepper and celery. The triple-decker sandwich is dressed with lettuce, tomato and bacon (because Mies also said “everything is better with bacon”). The sandwich is delicious in the summer, fresh and light -- yet comforting in the winter, with more than enough bread and mayo to nap you down afterwards. The Fountain Blue is huge, so there’s plenty to take home for later. Frances’ also has delicious French fries and a most excellent matzah ball soup to start it all off.

The restaurant is warm and friendly, dark wood and tchotchkes keep bored eyes entertained. We’ll admit we’ve had problems once or twice with the service -- Frances’ can get extremely crowded on the weekends -- but as long as we get our sandwich, we leave happy.

Frances’ is located at 2552 N. Clark St.
