Lincoln is Coming Again

It’s coming, folks. The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial in 2009. You won’t be able to eat your Wheaties in the morning without reading something about Lincoln, so don’t say we didn’t warn you.
And while we still have more than 10 months to go before 2009 arrives, the celebration kicks off next Tuesday in Hodgenville, Kentucky, at the Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site with the Lincoln Bicentennial Inaugural Ceremony. First Lady Laura Bush will deliver remarks at the Abraham Lincoln Elementary School there, and the town will lay a wreath at the foot of an Abraham Lincoln statue.
The celebration is going to hit closer to home, though. Right now, the city of Decatur is asking citizens to cast a vote on the city’s Web site, selecting their favorite Lincoln statue concept. The city council has commissioned a local sculptor to create and erect a work dedicated to the memory of Lincoln’s decision to enlist African-American men into the Union Army. The winning model will be announced following Black History Month.
