One Great Sandwich: Morgan's on Maxwell's Monterey Chicken

Chicagoist alum Scott Smith once described Morgan's on Maxwell as "a great destination for anyone who wants to take a date to dinner without missing SportsCenter." The burgers and other sandwiches here, however, have some merit. Although every time we step into Morgan's we can't help but think about all the dugouts, tube socks and "Grown Folks Music" we used to buy in the same location when Maxwell Street was, well, Maxwell Street.

Our normal go-to sandwich at Morgan's is the buffalo chicken sandwich. And we thought that's what came out of our mouth when we placed our order on a visit last week. What we received, the Monterey chicken sandwich, was this surprisingly tender chicken breast slathered with Monterey Jack cheese and bacon on a toasted bun. We were sold at "bacon" and it made for a beautiful mistake. The fries that come with the sandwich are also a meal in themselves: crispy on the outside, tender inside. Wash this down with a pint of Magic Hat and a cup of Morgan's chili and you got yourself a serious Sunday brunch set up, and we didn't have to look up once to check out SportsCenter.
