Wine Tasting
Most of you readers know that we get an inordinate amount of our "BotW" selections from Lush Wine & Spirits, so much so that it's easy to forget that they mainly sell wine. Their "School of Lush" wine lesson series is an informative and fine way to understand and educate yourselves about wine. This evening at their University Village location the focus is on cabernet sauvignon. Taste premier selections from around the globe and learn how subtle differences in terroir, aging, and vinting can affect the flavor of this popular varietal.
1306 S. Halsted, 7:30-9 p.m., $30.
Music
The Empty Bottle is the setting for an evening of filling-rattling metal sludge featuring Weedeater, Black Tusk and Rabid Rabbit. The draw here is Weedeater and their wall of doom. All but one track from their most recent album, God Luck and Good Speed, was produced by none other than Steve Albini for that extra punch in the gut. Best of all? The show is free.
1035 N. Western, 10 p.m.
Based on the novel by Romain Gary and shelved by Paramount Pictures upon initial release, White Dog is the story of a dog trained by white supremacists to attack people with dark skin, and the efforts of one fanatical trainer to deprogram it. Director Sam Fuller and co-scriptwriter Curtis Hanson utilize an outlandish, almost cartoon-like dialogue to heighten the tension of its gritty shooting and Ennio Morricone film score.
University of Chicago DOC Films at Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th Street, 7 p.m., $5.

500 W. Washington, 6-7:30 p.m., $35.
