Hip Hop? Hooray!

We admit we’re fans of America’s Best Dance Crew on MTV (don’t hate), and with the mass popularity of shows like Dancing With the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance, we know we’re not the only ones into it lately. (Please note, we draw the line at Your Mama Don't Dance, the creepy show where young adults bump n' grind with their parents.)
But this weekend the poppin’ and lockin’ comes out of the television and onto the stage as the Athenaeum Theatre in Lakeview welcomes The One, a hip hop dance show that unites celebrated urban dancers for a one-night only performance. Rising stars of breaking, hip hop and even urban tap will all be represented.
More than just hot moves, Illinois-based host Hip Hop ConnXion uses dance to promote positivity. This co-ed ensemble incorporates all ages and races, and gears their performances toward encouraging young fans to use dance as a form of expression. This non-profit group is also a big supporter of the D.A.R.E. program, staying in school and generally believing in your dreams. Is anyone else having an 80s flashback?
With more than a dozen youthfully spirited acts in the line-up, the show promises to be high energy. Preview what’s to come in this video of ConnXion collaborating with fellow headliner CODA at Dance Chicago in 2007.
The One plays this Saturday, March 15th at 7:30 p.m.at The Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport.
