Drag Yourself to Girls Will Be Girls

By Ali Trachta in Arts & Entertainment on Mar 21, 2008 7:20PM

What would you get if Karen from Will & Grace, Charlotte from Sex and the City and crazy redhead Gloria Clearly from Wedding Crashers moved in together to bask in a Golden Girls-style twisted sisterhood?

The product of that perfect storm would be much like Hubris Productions’ latest show, Girls Will Be Girls. In this stage play version of a hit indie film by the same title, three male actors bring to life three colorful female characters in a way that’s anything but a drag.

Girls Will Be Girls follows the story of three hilarious Hollywood ladies, all with sordid pasts and bones to pick with each other. Evie, a washed-up actress who’s either sucking on a man or a martini glass (but still has a great high kick), refuses to accept she’s past her prime. Even though she never really had one. Coco, Evie’s oldest frenemy, is deficient in the self-esteem department, possibly from hiding not only two abortions but also her secret love for the abortion doctor. And Varla, pudgy but otherwise perfect, thinks the road to stardom is paved in prostitution. Watching these three poke and prod at one another while each trying to stave off their own demise results in a highly entertaining show smothered in musical numbers, feather boas and great shoes.

And you can even feel good about buying the ticket. Hubris Productions is dedicated to contributing more than just art to the community. For each show they do, Hubris donates a portion of the ticket sales to a charitable organization. In this case, they’re supporting the venue that houses them - the Center on Halsted which serves the LGBT community.

To sum up, worthy show, worth cause, worth your time.

Hoover-Leppen Theatre at the Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted.
