The Friday Flashback: Steve Goodman

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Mar 21, 2008 1:00PM

2008_03_goodman.gifHe lived more life in 36 years than most of us would in twice that span. He's written songs that have become part of the American popular canon ("City of New Orleans" and "You Never Even Call Me By My Name"), tongue-in-cheek novelty songs ("A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request") and outright drivel ("Go Cubs Go").

One of the constants of Steve Goodman's life was a warped sense of humor. We're firm believers that a positive mindset can buy those stricken with terminal illness some extra time. Goodman had that in spades, and it came across in the music he played. Whether he made fans laugh, cry, ponder, wist nostalgic, or riled, Goodman's music has a passion that is undeniable. we highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of the anthology No Big Surprise, as it has the songs he's best known for and some rarities guaranteed to work their way into your head.

We needed some levity this morning, so we're sharing with you one of those songs Goodman would play occasionally. Written by his friend Michael Smith, "Wonderful World of Sex" is corny, catchy, and guaranteed to make you laugh in that way Tina Fey thinks is not good.
