Movie Music at the Harris

2008_4harris.jpg If you haven't yet seen a performance at Millennium Park's Harris Theater, you're missing out. It's a sleek space that has outstanding acoustics, and not only are the seats comfy but there's pretty much not a bad seat in the house. An upcoming concert of recent film music makes a great reason to give the Harris a try.

On Monday, April 7 the CSO presents a special program consisting of music from Francis Ford Coppola's Youth Without Youth (composed by Osvaldo Golijov) and The Hours (composed by Philip Glass). The former is an eclectic suite combining elements of the Hollywood style, typified by composer Bernard Herrmann, with strong expressionist and Eastern European flavors. It also features an instrument called (we kid you not) the hyperaccordion. Obviously worth it just to see that. Philip Glass' score for the 2002 film has been fashioned into three-movement concerto by longtime associate Michael Riesman, who will also perform on piano. Glass always seems to get dumped on these days, but until you've heard his music performed live you haven't really allowed yourself to be hypnotized by it.

The show is at 8 p.m. and the $20 ticket ($10 for students) gets you beer and pizza afterwards. Yes, you read correctly: CSO + Philip Glass + beer + pizza.
