Your Dose of Dance

joffrey.JPGFor anyone due for a romantic date, looking to entertain a young niece, or in the mood for something beautiful, American Ballet Theater is in town performing Sleeping Beauty – scored by Tchaikovsky and danced by some of the best classical dancers in the entire world.

Don’t get us wrong: Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet is also fantastic, and offers a youthful spin to an often stuffy art form. With a new artistic director and construction almost complete on their brand new rehearsal space, the company continues to grow. Still, no American company can do classical ballet quite like ABT, and while perfection can be boring in some capacities, ABT’s execution of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale will guarantee flawless technique, along with lavish sets and costumes. The score isn’t too shabby either – hello, Tchaikovsky?!?

The limited run of seven Chicago performances and ABT’s reputation has resulted in slim ticket availability; at this point, no show is completely sold out, but be prepared to have a good vantage point of Civic Opera House’s ceiling and upper walls.

Civic Opera House, April 9-13, $57-97
