Free Swanky Yogurt Today

By Margaret Lyons in Food on Apr 15, 2008 4:42PM

Warm weather and frozen treats go together like rama lama lama ke ding a de dinga a dong, and temps are finally on the rise. We checked out Wicker Park's new upscale froyo place Starfruit at their preview last week, and the joint officially opens today, dispensing free treats to taxpayers and evaders alike. Free ice cream(like products) = best.

Starfruit Cafe (obnoxious, noisy website alert) serves frozen kefir and nonfrozen parfaits, but we only tried the frozen stuff which comes in original, which just tastes yogurt-y, and pomegranate, which tasted more like berries than pomegranates to us. Kefir is a little tangier than regular 'gurt, and while it's reasonably tasty, the real draw for Starfruit the toppings. There are 12 fruit options, tons of cereal choices, mochi, candy stuff, granola from Milk & Honey, and oh yeah--cupcakes from Alliance bakery. We tried pomegranate with mango and granola, and plain with red velvet cupcake and Fruity Pebbles (pictured), and we'd give both a solid B+. A small costs $3, and toppings cost extra, so it's on the pricey side of things, but a swanky, healthy dessert place that's open til 2am on the weekends is going to do just fine.
