Free Rock
Evil Beaver's still around, you ask? Shocked us, as well when we saw that they were playing a free show at Cobra Lounge tonight. Evie Evil is still on bass with what appears to be a rotating succession of drummers every 9-12 months (all except for original drummer Laura Ann Beaver have bios on the EB website). But they still come correct with that solid and sludgy 2-person rock that Local H also mines so well. Also on the bill is Ramova, a white-hot power trio whose blend of garage rock and classic power chords make our short hairs stand on end. The Lusties open.
286 N. Ashland, 10 p.m.
Jazz
Brazilian singer Luciana Souza draws upon a range of influences in her work, from jazz and bossa nova to world music, classical and even fado and torch. Her song selections are carefully chosen for their lyrical impact as much as their sonics. Her debut on Verve, The New Bossa Nova, features interpretations of songs by Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Steely Dan, Elliott Smith, Brian Wilson, and the expected inclusion of Jobim's "Waters of March." Souza is in town this evening for a concert at U of C's Mandel Hall.
1131 E. 57th Street, 7:30 p.m., $30 ($5 students and really cheap teachers).
Hyde Park Arts Center's third annual Creative Move event begins this evening. This year's theme, "Moving Mountains," is a 24-hour celebration of art in all its forms, featuring art-making, film screenings, and extravagant performances, artist talks, late-night dancing, and an exhibition that invites you literally to move mountains. Updates for the event can be found here. And it's also free.
5020 S. Cornell, 8 p.m. tonight through 8 p.m. Saturday.
Wine Tasting
The Junior League of Chicago is hosting a wine tasting at its headquarters this evening. Enjoy a selection of red and white luxury wines from Terlato Wines International, food pairings, raffle, & keepsake gift in one of Chicago's most historic homes.
1447 N. Astor, 6-9:30 p.m., $30 JLC members, $40 everyone else.
