Girls Really Do Rock (Duh)

By Lizz Kannenberg in Arts & Entertainment on May 21, 2008 6:13PM

2008_05_girlsrock.gifThe early 90's Riot Grrrl movement in Los Angeles and Minneapolis proved concretely that even though we like to paint our nails and smell nice, sometimes a girl just needs to rock. Girls Rock! Chicago camps are a non-profit organization offering area young ladies the opportunity explore self-expression through traditionally rock-oriented instruments and arrangements. It's a killer concept and one we wish had existed in suburban Wisconsin when we were slogging through our formative years.

In preparation for this year's camp, which runs from July 28- August 3 in Lakeview, Girls Rock! Chicago is holding its final fundraiser of 2008 tomorrow at the Abbey Pub. Called the "rock lottery," show, entertainment will be provided by members of Chicago groups The Laureates, Hidden Mitten, Coupleskate, Blue Ribbon Glee Club, Three Dollar Bill, In Miniature, Love of Everything, Chin Up Chin Up, and Gay Baby. Where's the lottery part come in, you ask? Well, each member of the above-mentioned bands was randomly assigned through a lottery to one of seven new bands and given three weeks to come up with 2 original songs. With names like The No and Knock it Off! and Jehovah's Wetness, we're expecting some seriously cool stuff from some of Chicago's most creative artists.

Cool, and for a good cause!

The Girls Rock! Chicago Rock Lottery Benefit Show is tomorrow, Thursday May 22, at the Abbey Pub, 9:00 p.m., $8
