Death Cab Preview

By Ali Trachta in Arts & Entertainment on May 29, 2008 3:42PM

Two Chicagoistas snuck in amongst the indie rock glitterati two weeks ago for a taping of an interview with Death Cab for Cutie on Sound Opinions. The crowd of only a couple hundred that gathered to bear witness was treated to a mini-concert by the band, interspersed with the off-the-cuff interview style of tag team show hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot.

The intimate setting made the now famous west coast rockers seem very accessible as they discussed their journey from pre-O.C. obscurity to the top of the pops. One highlight was a chat about the band's new single "I Will Possess Your Heart," in which the rock critic twosome pretty much accuse songwriter and lead singer Ben Gibbard of being a creepy stalker. Gibbard addresses the tune's rather sinister lyrics by explaining that when he writes, he goes to those same dark, melancholy places we all visit when we're alone. The hosts also ask for the band's take on the rampant cyber-theft of music, which sparks the most sound opinion of all: "It's hard to cry with a loaf of bread in your hand."

To hear the program in its entirety, tune into Chicago Public Radio, 91.5 FM at 8 p.m. this Friday or 11 a.m. this Saturday, or download the podcast after Friday.
