Give Back: Greater Chicago Food Depository June Events

By Amy Mikel in Arts & Entertainment on Jun 5, 2008 9:07PM

There have been recent depressing reports of food banks like the Greater Chicago Food Depository suffering from some negative effects of rising gas prices. But the month of June holds some fun and alternative ways to support this particular organization and help to fight hunger in Chicago:

  • Canstruction Chicago 2008 is opening tomorrow in the Apparel Center of the Merchandise Mart. Twenty architecture and engineering teams compete to design and build giant structures entirely from canned food. A preview and judging takes place tonight at 6 p.m., and the exhibit opens to the public tomorrow, running through the 22nd. Price of admission is one canned good. At the close of the exhibit, all food used in the sculptures will be donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. (Pictured is last year's people's choice winner.)

  • Obama supporters Against Hunger and Poverty is meeting Wednesday, June 11 at 6 p.m. for a community service event at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Volunteers will help to repackage donated food and other products during the three hour event.

  • The 23rd annual Walk Against Hunger takes place on Saturday, June 14th at 9:30 a.m. Last year, the event raised over $366,000 to benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository member pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.
