Sweet Samantha

By Lizz Kannenberg in Arts & Entertainment on Jul 2, 2008 6:13PM

2008_07_samanthcrain.jpgSamantha Crain is just 21 years old, and already she's garnered such heady descriptions as "the bridge between Radiohead and the Carter Family" (American Songwriter) and "like Judy Garland singing Neutral Milk Hotel songs" (Shipwreck). Indeed, the young songstress draws as equally on the rich past of stylized folk legend as she is on some of the more experimental elements of modern pop.

Possessing a beautiful, inflective voice, and an ear for injecting jaunty rhythms, jazz progressions, and mood-heavy tones into her pretty melodies, it's not surprise that her upcoming release is heavily anticipated - especially in the wake of Feist's recent crossover success. Confiscation is due July 22 on Ramseur Records, home to surprising folk-rockers the Avett Brothers.
