Warrants have been issued for two men believed to be running a a cockfighting ring in Will County. Animal control removed a number of roosters from one suspect's farm in Beecher, along with three maltreated horses. Despite the warrants being issued weeks ago, they still have yet to be executed and everyone is clamming up as to the reason why:
[Will County sheriff's office spokeswoman Kathy] Hoffmeyer declined to comment Friday on why the warrants had not been carried out, saying, "We don't want to jeopardize the case by commenting further."Will County Animal Control and the Illinois Department of Agriculture, which also participated in the June 10 raid, also declined to comment.
"The matter is still under investigation," a spokesman for animal control administrator Dr. Leroy Schild said.
This is not the first cockfighting sting in Will County -- 1,000 gamecocks were seized from a farm there in 2002. According to the story, a prize winning cock can command up to $3,000. Hoo boy, can it! [Southtown Star, Cock photo by kudzuplanet]
