Solve Memorial on the Bloomingdale Trail

By Margaret Lyons in Arts & Entertainment on Jul 14, 2008 8:00PM

2008_7_14.ripsolve.jpgLast month's murder of artist Brendan "Solve" Scanlon left the street art community reeling, and impromptu memorials popped up all over the city. One of Brendan's friends, commenter This Is Awkward, is organizing a more formal, permanent memorial as part of the mural along the Bloomingdale Trail. She writes,

Recently I have been in touch with the group Co-op Image, who are organizing the completion of the mural. They have thus far expressed interest in allowing friends/family/artists to create a memorial mural for Brendan along the Trail.

What we need now are artists’ submissions for the mural. These can be for individual contributions or collaborations for the entire mural space. It would be best to photograph your drawings and sketches and send them to me in email format. I will be sorting through the submissions and working to create a comprehensive application. Please keep in mind that not all Chicagoans have friendly feelings toward street/graffiti artists and that pieces or styles deemed “offensive” could limit our chances of acceptance. Progression of some spaces along the wall has, for instance, been halted because of residential complaints that they were too “urban” or graffiti-oriented in style.

There are many amazing memorials to Brendan all around the city and it would be great to add another that would be protected for future generations to appreciate.

Please send all submissions to Rottenil@yahoo.com

Thanks,

This is Awkward
