Chicago Olympians: Day 1

The Olympics are fully underway now after a stunning, if not surreal, Opening Ceremonies. The 13-hour time difference between Chicago and Beijing means Day 1 is now in the books and by the time NBC's primetime coverage rolls around this evening, Day 2 will be underway. A few Chicago-area Olympians were in action and you can check out their results after the jump.
- Men's Road Cycling - Lemont's Christian Vande Velde came in 17th though he put out a great effort at the road race, finishing in 6:24:19, only 30 seconds off gold medal pace.
- Women's Basketball - Team USA Defeated the Czech Replublic 97-57 in the opening game for both teams. Chicago Sky star Sylvia Folwes led all rebounders with 14.

Syvlia Fowles - 16 pts, 14 reb, 1 ast, 2 blk
Candace Parker - 9 pts, 3 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl, 1 blk
Cappie Poindexter - 12 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl - Women's Swimming - Christine Magnuson finished first in her preliminary heat for the 100m butterfly with a time of 57.70 seconds. The semifinal heats are tonight (Chicago time) and the finals tomorrow night (again, Chicago time).
- Women's Volleyball - As of posting, the Americans and Japanese are still playing. Bloomington's Ogonna Nnamani hasn't seen any action, but we'll keep you posted.
