Cubs Outlast Cards
Jim Edmonds had a fantastic day against his former team, belting two solo home runs to help the Cubs outlast the rival Cardinals in 11 innings. Henry Blanco singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th after the Cubs managed to load the bases. Ted Lilly allowed two runs over seven-and-one-third innings, though reliever Bob Howry got the win after the bullpen (including Carlos Marmol and Jeff Samardzija) held the Cardinals. However, it was Alfonso Soriano who, in spite of an 0-for-5 performance at the plate, saved the game in the top of the sixth when he threw out Joe Mather at home plate to end the inning and a Cardinals scoring threat. Carlos Zambrano and Todd Wellemeyer take the hill tomorrow afternoon in Game Two of the series.

Buehrle Baffles BoSox
On the strength of an outstanding outing from Mark Buehrle (7IP, 1ER, 4H, 8K), the White Sox took game one of the Battle of the Sox, 5-3. Orlando Cabrera and A.J. Pierzynski knocked in two runs each and Carlos Quentin smacked his 31st homer to put the game out of reach. The Red Sox offensive production came off of a three-run Dustin Pedroia home run off of Octavio Dotel after Dotel replaced Buehrle. It's a sharp start for the Pale Hose after they were swept at Comiskey by the Red Sox last year by a combined score of 46-7. Said Buehrle: "All of last year was so miserable that [blowout losses] happened a lot more than everyone thinks."
