Cubs Take Series From Cards
Taking advantage of Cardinal miscues and a strong outing from Ryan Dempster, the Cubs took the final game of their series with the Cardinals, 6-2. Dempster gave up two runs on six hits over six and 2/3 innings. The Cubs offensive spark came in the sixth inning when a pair of Cardinal errors led to five runs as the Cubs tagged the Cards (still struggling) bullpen. Mark DeRosa and Ronny Cedeno both knocked in two runs in the game and Kerry Wood made his first outing since missing several games with back spasms. The Cubs are off today before playing three-game series in Atlanta and Florida this week.
White Sox Out-Homer BoSox
Despite giving up a three-run home run to Red Sox third basemen Mike Lowell in the top of the first, the White Sox powered themselves past Boston, 6-5, in the third game of a four-game series. Jermaine Dye hit his 27th home run of the season, a solo shot, in the second inning, and Carlos Quentin and Jim Thome both hit two-run homers in the third to put the White Sox ahead for good. Gavin Floyd pitched five and a third innings to get the win while Bobby Jenks picked up his 24th save of the season. The Battle of the Sox concludes tonight and then the White Sox welcome Kansas City to town for a three-game series.
