Chicago Olympians: Day 4

By Marcus Gilmer in Miscellaneous on Aug 12, 2008 4:00PM

2008_08_12_chioly.jpgThe time difference between Chicago and Beijing shouldn't confuse us so much, but we still feel a little bit like Marty McFly sometimes. On Monday we watched events taped on Monday in Beijing that we originally saw Sunday night and then saw live events from Tuesday morning. Or was it taped events from Sunday and live events from Monday? We really have no idea. All we know is that it was another good day for our area athletes as they earned a few more medals. Holla!

Men's Swimming - Lake Forest and Northwestern's Matt Grevers added a silver medal to his count yesterday er, earlier today (see what we mean?) when he placed second in the 100m backstroke behind American teammate Aaron Peirsol. Grevers already has a gold medal for his qualifying contribution to the U.S. men's 4x100 relay team that won gold in ridonkulous fashion on Monday over France.

Men's Gymnastics - With a contribution from University of Illinois star Justin Spring, the U.S. Men took home the bronze in the team competition.

Men's Basketball - Behind a game-high 19 points from Dwyane Wade, Team USA beat Angola 97-76 in their second game of the tournament. Wade also had five rebounds and a steal in the victory. The Bulls' Andres Nocioni had 6 points and 8 rebounds for Argentina in their victory over Australia.

Softball - Behind four strong, no-hit innings from the Chicago Bandits' Jennie Finch, Team USA took down Venezuela 11-0 in a game called by the "mercy rule." The Olympics clearly do not follow the teachings of Cobra Kai.

Men's Indoor Volleyball - Capt. Tom Hoff and the U.S. men's volleyball team had a strong showing in defeating Italy 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-15, 25-21), their second victory so far.

Rowing - A mea culpa - we've tried to follow as much as we could but somehow our rowing coverage slipped through the cracks. On Sunday, Jamie Schroeder and the U.S. Men's Quadruple Sculls team finished third in their prelim heat as did Team Canada, led by former Chicago Rowing member Ashley Brzozowicz in Women's Eights. Racing continues throughout the week.
