Chicago Olympians: Day 5

2008_08_chioly.jpgLast night's women's gymnastic team competition was the only time we're able to watch underage girls in leotards jump around and not feel creepy. But just how old were some of those Chinese girls? 10-years old? We thought the only birth certificate shenanigans in international sports competitions involved Little Leaguers. While we were busy watching team handball games online, a few of our Chicago-area athletes continued in their quest for medals. Wednesday's results after the jump.

Wrestling - Despite a valiant effort in the Greco-Roman (74kg) tournament, T.C. Dantzler finished out of medal contention.

Men's Soccer - The U.S. team continued to struggle in a 2-1 loss to Nigeria. Captain Brian McBride had a shot on goal and goalie Brad Guzan allowed two goals, though the Nigerians had a ridiculous 18 shots on goal. With the loss, the U.S. team is eliminated from medal contention.

Softball - After throwing that no-hitter yesterday, the Chicago Bandits' Jennie Finch got a day of rest as the U.S. beat rivals Australia 3-0. Benjy has more on another Chicago connection.

Women's Indoor Volleyball - Ogonna Nnamani and the U.S. women beat Venezuela 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 25-18). The team stands at 2-1 in Group A with a good chance of moving on to the quarterfinals.

Rowing - Team Canada's Women's Eights team, featuring former Chicago Rowing member Ashley Brzozowicz, manage to qualify for the quarterfinals by winning their repechage heat.

Women's Basketball - Team USA steamrolled Mali 97-41.
