Chicago Olympians: Day 7

2008_08_chioly.jpgAfter watching another thrilling night of gymnastics, we've determined that if there's one thing our life needs, it's running commentary from Bela Karolyi. The man could make watching paint drying sound excruciatingly exciting. Aside from Bela's enthusiasm, Day 7 saw many of our Chicago-area athletes, including diver Christina Loukas, in action as well as the debut of Track & Field on the schedule. Check out Friday's Chicago-related results after the jump.

Women's 3m Springboard Diving - Christina Loukas finished eighth out of 30 divers in the preliminary round of the women's 3m springboard, but it's plenty good enough to qualify for tomorrow's semifinals.

Men's Swimming - Matt Grevers, having already earned two medals, swam the backstroke leg as he helped the U.S. qualify for the 4 x 100 Medley Relay. The finals are Sunday and could be the event in which Michael Phelps breaks Mark Spitz's record for most gold medals in a single Olympics.

Women's Basketball - Team USA laid the thunder down against Spain, 93-55. They'll finish out their preliminary round against New Zealand on Sunday.
Tamika Catchings - 9 pts, 4 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl, 2 blk
Syvlia Fowles - 10 pts, 4 reb
Candace Parker - 13 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 1 blk
Cappie Poindexter - 4 pts

Softball - The U.S. team won again, defeating Japan 7-0, but didn't need any assistance from aces Jennie Finch or Cat Osterman.

Women's Indoor Volleyball - Ogonna Nnamani and Team USA outlasted the Chinese in an epic 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 15-11) win. Their last preliminary match-up is on Sunday against Poland.
