Graffiti Artist This Month’s Installation at Phaiz

By Amy Mikel in Arts & Entertainment on Aug 15, 2008 7:20PM

2008_8_15_jerseyjoe.jpgBilling itself as a place where “fashion and art collide", Phaiz boutique continues its revolving relationship with both designers and the artists whose work adorns its walls. Since November 2007, boutique owner Robin Kyle has each month invited a new artist to create an exclusive installation within the space of the shop.

In light of recent discussions about graffiti as “art", it’s notable that this month’s installation will be featuring graffiti artist Jersey Joe Rime. Rime, who began painting graffiti in 1991, plans to spray-paint every inch of the walls in the 800-square foot boutique using his trademark hearty, vivid color palette and progressive lettering style. His internationally recognized work is featured in numerous books, magazines, and videos, and he has a spray paint sponsorship from MTN colors. Rime has also been teaching graffiti art to inner-city kids within the Los Angeles public school system since 2005.

Opening reception for the installation is this evening, and Rime's artist collective known as Seventh Letter has designed a sketchbook with a laser-cut cover to give away at tonight’s event.

673 N. Milwaukee Ave, opening reception tonight, 7 p.m. - 11 p.m., exhibit through 9/10
