Chicago Olympians: Day 10

2008_08_chioly.jpgWe're coming down the homestretch of the competition now, having completed 12 of the 18 days of competition (while the Olympics are "officially" 16 days long, there were two days of preliminary action before the opening ceremonies). And while China has dominated the gold medal count, Team USA continues to maintain a slight overall lead over the host nation. A few Chicago-area athletes were in action today, doing their part to help the US maintain that edge. Results, as always, after the jump.

Men's Basketball - Team USA continues to make it look easy, dumping Germany 106-57 in their final preliminary round game. Dwyane Wade had 10 points, four rebounds, and an assist in the American victory. Next up, the Americans will take on either Argentina or Croatia in the first round of the medal round depending on the outcome of the Argentina-Russia game.

Softball - A pair of Chicagoans, Cat Osterman and Jennie Finch, combined to pitch five shutout innings as Team USA continued to march their way towards the medal round, dispatching the Chinese 9-0. Osterman gave up one hit over three innings and Finch pitched a hitless two innings; both struck out three batters.

Men's Track & Field - David Neville ran a 45.22, good enough for second place in his heat in the Men's 400m run, qualifying him for the next round. Neville, who's been nursing a sore Achilles, said, "I thought I was going to be able to run a little bit slower. I did what I had to do and make it through."

Men's Indoor Volleyball - The start of the USA-Japan match was delayed and is still in progress.
