Chicago Olympians: Day 16

2008_08_chioly.jpgAaaaaaaand that's a wrap! Whew. After 16 action-packed days, the 2008 Summer Olympics have come to a close and America brought home the most medals (110) in spite of a fantastic effort by the host nation, China (100), who brought home more golds (51) than anyone else. And Chicagonia fared well themselves. We have no problem calling this one of the more exciting Olympics we've seen. Drama, intrigue, age controversies, this Games had it all (except a juicy ice skating scandal involving the Russian mafia). The last day recapped after the jump.

Men's Basketball - Dwyane Wade played a pivotal role as Team USA won the Gold in a physical, sometimes chippy game with Spain, 118-107. With LeBron and Kobe on the bench early in foul trouble, Wade stepped off the bench to lead all scorers with 27 points while also pulling down two rebounds, dishing two assists, and pulling off four steals.

Men's Indoor Volleyball - Wade wasn't the Chicago-area's only Golden Boy on Sunday: Sean Rooney, Tom Hoff, and the rest of Team USA took down Brazil 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23) for the Gold. It was the USA's first gold in the event in 20 years and an emotional one, coming two weeks after coach Hugh McCutcheon's father-in-law was killed and his mother-in-law was critically inured in a violent attacks as the games began.
